COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. --
Right on time for the year-end holiday travel season, drivers get the gift of cheaper gas as pump prices dip below $3.
According to AAA, the average price for regular unleaded is about $3.22 in Colorado but in Colorado Springs several gas stations have posted prices of $2.99 or less.
"It's about $15 bucks less to fill it up [Friday] than it was a three, four weeks ago," Visa Perlinger, a Colorado Springs driver said.
Weak consumer demand and a large supplies are pushing pump prices down.
Gas prices have been on the decline since October 19 going from $3.47 to $3.09, almost a 40 cent drop, according to AAA.
More than 6 million people in the Mountain states are expected to hit the roadways for the year-end holiday travel, a 2 percent increase compared to last year.
The projection also exceeds national year-end travel trends.
"$3.01 cent or $2.99 really doesn't matter much does it, but it's all psychological."
While that penny might not add up to a ton of savings gas prices are finally going in a downward direction and in Colorado Springs gas is priced less than the national average of $3.27.
So, like the saying goes a "penny saved is another penny earned".
Compared to December 2010 gas prices in Colorado Springs are still high, last year regular unleaded was $2.72.
