Search for missing Fountain man continues

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The search for a developmentally disabled man who went missing in Security resumed Friday morning.

Officials said 23-year-old Eugene Harris Jr. left his home near Hayes Drive and Security Boulevard around 6 p.m. Thursday evening to walk to the Wal Mart located on Highway 85/87.

Around 7:15 p.m., a witness called 911 after seeing a man walking near the drainage culvert on Fontaine Boulevard near the highway.

Officials went to search the area, but found nothing suspicious.

Around 9 p.m., Harris' father called authorities when his son never returned home from his walk to Wal Mart.

The family's home is located near the area where the witness reported seeing someone walking. Authorities believe Harris may have attempted to cross the ditch on his way to the store.

Officials with the El Paso County Sheriff's OfficeFountain Police Department, Security and Fountain Fire departments as well as Colorado Springs Heavy Rescue searched a wide area around the drainage culvert for more than two hours Thursday night, but were unable to locate Harris.

That search was called off around 11 p.m. for safety reasons. Officials resumed Friday morning at daylight.

Sgt. Mike Schaller with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said Harris is developmentally disabled, but high-functioning.

He is described as a 23-year-old black man, 5'7" tall, 170-180 lbs. Officials said Harris also wears hearing aids.
