DENVER -- A Colorado Army National Guard member was among the 38 people killed when a helicopter crashed in Afghanistan.

FOX21's sister station in Denver, FOX31, confirmed Chief Warrant Officer David Carter died in the Chinook helicopter that crashed Saturday.

Carter, a 10-year veteran of Buckley Air Foce Base in Colorado, is believed to be the pilot of the helicopter.

The U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan said the 30 U.S. troops and eight Afghans who died in the crash were on a mission to assist forces pursuing a Taliban leader.

It was the deadliest single loss to U.S. forces in the decade-long war.
