EL PASO COUNTY, COLO. -- The Colorado State Patrol has launched an investigation into why an off-duty El Paso County Sheriff's deputy ran a red light and crashed his personal car into another, killing a woman Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies said 42-year-old Rodney Fannin reportedly ran a red light on Highway 94 in El Paso County, t-boning a car turning from the highway onto Curtis Road.
The driver of the car that was hit, 41-year-old Vivian Elmo from Colorado Springs, died at the scene.
Fannin was also involved in a crash in January, where he was cited for careless driving causing bodily injury.
Elmo was stationed at Schriever Air Force Base.
Fannin was taken to the hospital with injuries. He has been with the sheriff's office for nine years.
