COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Division of Wildlife officials said a bear broke in to a home in southwest Colorado Springs Monday morning.

According to officials, the bear somehow got into the kitchen and rummaged around, but did not damage to the inside of the home, which is located in the 1400 block of Cheyenne Boulevard just north of the Broadmoor Hotel.

One person was in the house at the time but was not harmed. The resident said he saw his cat "puffed up" in the kitchen, which is when he saw "a very large" black bear.

The back door had been left open for the family dog.

The house also has bee hives, which officials said is also likely to attract bears.

Back on June 23, police reported an aggressive bear near the UCCS campus in the city.

In September, three bears broke into a home in the same part of the city and also rummaged through the kitchen. Those three bears were put down by wildlife officials. One week earlier, two cubs broke into a home off West Woodmen Road and were put down.

Wildlife officials said they usually see more bears in the Pikes Peak Region when they come out of hibernation in the spring. They said if bears break into a home, they are likely to break into another, which is why they are often put down.

The bear seen Monday was gone before officials arrived.
