COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A heat wave is upon us, and residents in southern Colorado are looking for ways to stay cool.

On Wednesday highs were in the upper 90's and low 100's, and those without air conditioning were forced to find other ways to beat the heat such as a neighborhood pool, or Uncle Wilbur Fountain in downtown Colorado Springs.

"It is like, super hot, so hot it is like burning my feet," Jackie said.

Jackie and her family enjoyed a day at Uncle Wilbur Fountain along with dozens of other kids and their parents.

For those without a pool, Uncle Wilbur is a place for families to have fun and cool off.

Parents said it is just one of many ways they beat the heat.

"We go swimming at the YMCA, and we go hiking a lot up in Mounument, it is cooler up there," parent April Reish said.

Playing in the water is a great way to keep the kids cool outdoors, but when it comes to keeping your home cool, there are several options to bring down the temps inside if you do not have the luxury of central air.

One option is to seal doors and windows to keep the warm air out.

"If you actually take the trim off your windows, seal it with a spray foam insulation, and then caulk and put the trim back on that makes a huge difference in your heating and cooling bills," Shawn Dever, Assistant Store Manager with the Home Depot said.

Other options include ceiling fans and swamp coolers.

Dever said the key is to keep the air moving in your home.

"Even with the portable swamp coolers and air conditioners, you still need a fresh air source for them to operate correctly, so just by opening a window on a cool afternoon or a cool morning is going to make a big difference," Dever said.

No matter what you decide to do, Dever said it is important to ask for help before installing any type of cooling machine.

And if worst comes to worst and it is just too hot, you can always join the kids in the water.

"Just like a day ago I swear it was 101 degrees," Jackie said.
