WIDEFIELD, COLO. -- Fans and a sparse basement is all that's left after Wednesday night's sewage situation. Homeowners said they came home to a swimming pool of water and feces after a pipe backed up.

"It's miserable, everything about it," Kevin Patterson, who's basement was flooded, said.  "It's miserable because we can't turn on the A/C because of the bloodborne pathogens and bacteria."

Widefield Water and Sanitation District officials said they're aware of the situation and have been working with all the affected homeowners, adding there's no way of determining what caused the back up, but they're assuming it's grease and tree roots.

They've agreed to remove standing water, feces and disinfect the area, but they are not going beyond that because they said they have not been found negligent.

"I believe Widefield Water and Sanitation District is responsible. I take precautions every six months and have my drains cleaned by a professional," Andrea Macholz, who's basement was flooded, said.

Macholz doesn't have sewage insurance but is expecting to have a lot clean-up costs. Her daughter lives in the basement, and Wednesday night's mess tainted everything. She wants it all cleaned, and that's something that Widefield Water and Sanitation District is trying accommodate.

"For the last day and a half I've been trying to talk to a supervisor, so me getting a hold of him was a miracle," Macholz said.

An insurance specialist and confirmed what Widefield Water and Sanitation District said - unless negligent they don't have to help.

The insurance agent even said most companies wouldn't help as much as Widefield has.
