COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Officials said they are investigating two fires that burned Monday afternoon on the north side of Colorado Springs as suspicious.
The first fire happened around 2 p.m. on Mount View Lane, and firefighters quickly responded to the scene.
"It just so happened that one of our units was in the area at the time, and they responded and they got here in about three minutes," Lt. Kriss Soppe with the Colorado Springs Fire Department said.
Crews found five vehicles, including a camper, engulfed in flames.
Officials said it took nearly 20 firefighters about 30 minutes to put the fire out.
Firefighters said they were able to stop the flames before they got inside the nearby buildings.
"There is some exterior damage, but it's pretty mild," Soppe said.
Then as firefighters were cleaning up the first fire, they said they noticed smoke and haze coming from nearby.
Officials said there was a small fire on the other side of the building, about 400 feet away, burning in a wooded area along Monument creek.
"Basically over the building and down the ravine," Lt. Greg Martinez with the CSFD said.
Crews quickly responded and put out the second fire within 15 minutes.
"We were very fortunate to get a quick response out to both, and so I think that alleviated a much larger situation," Martinez said.
Firefighters said they chose to call police because of the close proximity of the two fires.
"We have arson investigators on scene who is investigating both fires at this time, and police officers are out helping us scout the area," said Martinez.
Officials said a quick response is crucial, especially when the weather isn't on their side.
"Fortunately here in the Springs we're not in red flag conditions, but we're very darn close," Martinez said.
At this time no cause has been determined for either fire.
