COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Suspicious activity in the Stetson Hills and Sand Creek area has local homeowners and police on alert. The Colorado Springs Police Department has received several phone calls about a group of people going door-to-door claiming to be carpet cleaners, but they're not carrying any equipment.
When speaking with the homeowners they ask questions about what cars the homeowner own. While this is not criminal activity in itself, it is suspicious. CSPD is concerned the group is casing the area to see who is home.
"It's a very quiet neighborhood, that just really shocks me to be honest with you," Ken Diehl, a Colorado Springs resident, said.
Diehl said he always locks his cars and the doors to his home as a safety precaution. But just a few days ago he saw a young woman looking through his car windows. She eventually came to his front door and asked for a donation.
"I can't remember exactly what she wanted me to make a donation to, I asked for a pamphlet, she didn't have one, so I asked her to leave," Diehl said.
CSPD is investigating a number of home and car burglaries, but they cannot say if these alleged carpet cleaners are connected to any of the previous burglaries.
"If I don't know who the person is, I don't feel comfortable opening my door," Sherri Bingham, a Colorado Springs resident, said.
After a home invasion at a neighbor's house a few years back, Bingham started locking her doors. Now if anyone comes knocking when she's alone, she looks through the window. If she doesn't know the person she doesn't open the door. She'd rather be safe then sorry.
CSPD wants homeowners to be proactive, and if a group of people matching the description above come to your door, call the police.
