COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The city of Colorado Springs' bad budget means a lot of services in the Parks and Recreation Department went by the wayside last year. The Parks and Rec budget took an equal dip, falling from $19.7 million in 2008 to $3.1 million in 2010.
"Even with all the reductions we didn't see a reduction in the use in our parks, people still came," Kurt Schroeder, with the Parks & Recreation Department said.
Warm weather is right around the corner, and parks are going to be packed again. But compared to last year a few key services will be restored including trash collection and restrooms.
"It's very exciting for me and my son because I can teach him things and go places and not have to worry about where's the bathroom, is it open or closed," Alexandria Munoz, a Colorado Springs resident, said.
Parks and Rec had to prioritize and put what little money they had into the more popular parks that create revenue. But city council has restored part of their 2011 budget to $8.5 million. And while things are looking better, there's still work to be done.
"Our parks are not in the condition that we would like, and we try very hard to do the best we can with the resources we've got. But all too often we fall short," Schroeder said.
