PUEBLO COUNTY, COLO. -- Pueblo County Sheriff's Office deputies are calling the death of an 8-year-old girl "suspicious."
Deputies got a call about a dead person in the Meadowbrook Mobile Home Park around 6:50 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived at the park in the 33000 block of Highway 96, they found Desirea French's body inside one of the homes.
The caller was 61-year-old John French Sr., who also owns the mobile home. He came home from work to find Desirea dead and French Jr. bleeding from the head.
French, as well as 32-year-old John French Jr., suffered gunshot wounds.
French Jr. is at Parkview Hospital, but his condition is unknown.
"The investigation is ongoing," Lt. Todd Perry with the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office said. "The crime scene is fairly extensive inside, and it's gonna take some time."
Deputies said there is no indication anyone else was in the home at the time of the shooting, but the investigation is ongoing.
They also said there were no signs of forced entry and don't believe the nearby community is in any danger.
"We do have an individual that is of particular interest to us at this point, and time but I would be hesitant to talk about who that is at this point," Perry said.
Nearby residents are taking extra precautions.
"I'm not really concerned, but I make sure I'll be locking my doors and making sure my kids are safe at all times," Hope Fields, who lives nearby, said.
Deputies said Desirea's death has touched the entire community.
"Our hearts do go out the family and everyone involved because this is a tragic loss," Perry said.
Fields said the 8-year-old's death is an eye-opener.
"I'm more upset that it happened because she's little," Fields said. "She's not an adult. If something had happened to an adult, okay I could understand it, but with her being so little, I have two little boys myself."
Psychologists and counselors are on hand at District 70 to assist students and staff. Deputies said Desirea's death hit the district hard.
Detectives will be at the mobile home community talking with residents and looking over the home where the shooting took place.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.
Deputies are asking anyone with information to come forward and contact the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office at 719-583-6250 or Crime Stoppers at 542-STOP.
