PEYTON, COLO. -- A group of Peyton volunteer firefighters are making good on their threat and quitting.
Eleven firefighters in all made the decision Tuesday night after Peyton Fire Chief Jack Rauer was reinstated. Allegations have been made of an unsafe work environment, so Chief Rauer was put on two-week paid leave while the complaints were investigated by the Peyton Fire Protection District Board.
The news spread fast and have locals like Nicholas Harris worried about their safety.
"With a fire here and a fire there that's a lot harder circumstances for [the Peyton Fire Department]," Harris said. Fire district officials said Peyton locals have nothing to worry about. With five volunteer fire fighters left and the fire chief, they have adequate numbers to keep the community safe. But the Falcon Fire Department has agreed to help with mutual aid as long as they're available. "We certainly hope that the situation is resolved in a timely fashion because we're not in a position to respond to all their calls for a long period of time," Falcon Fire Chief Trent Harwig said. There's been no communication between the fire district and the 11 firefighters that resigned. So, the Peyton Fire Department is starting to recruit for a new group of volunteer firefighters to bring staffing numbers back up.
