DENVER (AP) -- Gov. Bill Ritter plans to announce that Colorado will participate in a federal program aimed at identifying illegal immigrants when they're booked into jails.

Two officials familiar with the program told The Associated Press that Ritter would announce Tuesday morning that Colorado would implement the federal Secure Communities program with some modifications. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak before the announcement.

It wasn't immediately known what the modifications to the program would be. Secure Communities uses fingerprints to check a person's immigration status during jail bookings. The program is in place in 35 states.

Immigrant advocacy groups worry the program will lead to racial profiling.
