PUEBLO COUNTY, COLO. -- Pueblo Health Department officials said a fourth rabid skunk tested positive for rabies Tuesday. Officials found the skunk in the area of Baxter Road and Consolidation Lane along the Arkansas River.
The first rabid skunk was found in late September, and two more were found in October.
Health officials said it is important for pet owners to protect their pets from rabies with a vaccine. They said skunks with rabies can be found near houses interacting with people and pets.
Officials said anyone who sees an animal acting irregularly during the day should stay away from it and contact Pueblo Animal Services. Some common symptoms of rabies include stumbling and acting overly aggressive.
Pets that aren't vaccinated and come in contact with rabies have a high chance of getting infected and dying, according to health officials.
