COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- It looks like the Colorado Springs Streets Division will able to turn on all the streetlights they turned off earlier this year to save money.
City leaders said nothing is certain until the city budget is finalized in December, but right now it looks like most of the street lights that were turned off will be turned back on.
City sales tax revenue is better this year, and that is why the city can afford to turn the lights back on.
They said the focus will be to turn lights on in residential areas, but some lights along busy streets will remain off.
Crews will start the process in early December and should be finished in early January.
City officials said some residents have discovered they like having the lights off.
"I had some complaints when a light would be turned off accidentaly. Maybe it was the wrong location. It was at an intersection, we weren't turning lights off at intersections," City Traffic Engineer Dave Krauth said. "Neighbors around it liked it. One person said 'hey, wait a minute. I thought that was a critera to leave it on,' and 'oh shoot' year, you're right, and so we go back and turn it on and then the others complained. 'Wait a minute we didn't have it on.' So it's been an interesting process."
Some people adopted street lights and paid to keep them on this year, and a few had already paid for 2011.
The city said those people will have their money refunded.
