COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The grace period on the city's new red light cameras is over.

Colorado Springs put up four red light cameras around the city. They are at Nevada and Bijou, Barnes and Oro Blanco, Platte and Circle, and Platte and Murray.

Drivers seemed pretty evenly split. Some said it's a great way to make the streets safer. Others said it's just more government intrusion into our lives.

Police said they picked these four intersections because crash statistics showed those are where there were the most problems.

Up until now people who were caught on camera were given a warning. Now they'll be getting a ticket.

"I think it's a good thing if it saves lives," driver James Garrett said. "It's kinda like big brother watching over you, but if that's what we need to save lives and keep the streets safe, that's what has to happen."

Police said the cameras have been tested and are working properly.

Starting Saturday, red light runners at these intersections can expect a $75 ticket in the mail.

"I just think it's a money-making scheme basically," driver Steven Stewart said. "It's already been shown that when they put up lights like that they often shorten the yellow lights to try and get more money."

The tickets will tell drivers how they can view the violation online.

The hope is the the red light cams will reduce the number of serious crashes, something one woman experienced first hand.

"I got hit by a car when I was 19 years old. He ran the red light, and I went 50 feet in the air, bounced off and woke up in the x-ray room, and I didn't even know what happened," driver Dodie Callis said.

People who get tickets will have the option of either paying the fine or appearing in court to contest the violation.
