COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A standoff with Colorado Springs police lasted into Friday morning but ended without incident.
Just before 8 p.m. Thursday police received a 911 hang-up call from a home on North Logan Avenue near the intersection of East Pikes Peak Avenue.
Officers were sent to check on the caller, at which point police said an elderly male suspect came to the door, pointed a handgun at officers and asked them to leave.
Police established a perimeter after the man locked himself inside. The Tactical Enforcement unit was called out while neighbors were notified of the situation.
"Basic procedure at this point is to notify neighbors that we have a situation going on and that we're concerned about their safety," Sgt. David Edmondson of the Colorado Springs Police Department said. "They would have been given specific instructions about what to do in this particular case. They may have chosen to leave, they would have been escorted out. They may choose to stay in their homes, in which case they'd be given instructions on how to be safe while the situation is going on."
The standoff came to an end shortly after midnight following numerous conversations with the suspect.
Police said they determined he was unharmed and not in need of police services.
Police have not filed charges at this time, but an investigation continues into the man's possession of a handgun when he made contact with the officers.
