DENVER, COLO. -- About a month ago FOX21 News brought you the story about Gene Garcia, a veteran living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a huge Colorado Rockies fan.
His daughter organized a Facebook campaign to see if he could throw out a first pitch at a Rockies’ game.
Since the story aired on FOX21 fans on the Facebook page have quadrupled. Garcia was also offered the chance to throw out the first pitch at a Sky Sox game and this past weekend he and his family were invited to Coors field to view a game and batting practice.
Online it may look like just another fan page on Facebook, but for Garcia and his family, it's a whole lot more.
When Sarah Temple created a Facebook page for her father she never thought she'd get this far.
"When we first started I thought that it was gonna be me and my mom and a couple of cousins, but we've had such a huge outpouring of support and it's beyond my expectations," said Temple.
Since creating the page Garcia has been able to throw out the first pitch at a Sky Sox game and get a behind the scenes look at Coors field.
"Today we got a tour, got to watch the Rockies batting practice, take some pictures with some of the players and that was just great. I couldn't ask for a better day," said Garcia.
For his daughter getting this far means a whole lot.
"It really means that there are people out there that support good people in the world and there's kindness everywhere and we're so lucky to have experienced some of that and be a part of that," said Temple.
"Without that I wouldn't be here," said Garcia.
And even if Garcia never gets to throw out a first pitch at a Rockies game he and his family are thankful for the opportunities they've been given, thanks to a social networking site.
"Words can't describe it. It's wonderful," said Garcia.
"I think he really knows deep down that I love him so much and if nothing else were to come out of this it's definitely strengthened our relationship," said Temple.
Temple says she’s not giving up hope either on getting her father to throw out the first pitch at a Rockies game.
