COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- The new Family Assistance Center has opened at Fort Carson.

The building of the Family Assistance Center is a reaction to a report that was made public in 2009 by Fort Carson officials. In the 2009 report, it says between 2004 and 2008, 2,726 soldiers were identified as being involved in a violent crime. Since the report, action has been taken to reduce the number of soldiers causing harm.

One part of the report reads “while we don't know what caused the cluster of criminal behavior and misconduct in this one unit, we do know that we need to look more closely at individuals, units and the environments and communities where our soldiers work and live.”

As the sound of construction goes on in the new facility, Fort Carson hopes the new Family Assistance Center will provide a place for soldiers to come and get help so they can return to duty or transition back into society. The hope is all this will slow the trend of violence committed by soldiers who have been in combat.

‘We think our warriors in transition -- those who have been wounded in combat and those soldiers who are in their careers that need special treatment --  deserve only the best, and what you see here in our brand new facility, we provide what all our soldiers need,” said Brig. Gen. James Pasquarette, Fort Carson commander.

Some services the new facility will provide include Social Security benefits, Veterans Administration, Army Wounded Warrior program, career and alumni program, child and youth services and much more.

“It used to be you had to get in the car and drive up the hill to the hospital and go to the fourth floor to seek help. Now a soldier can go to a building on the footprint and go to somebody that is a part of their team and everybody knows who they are. There's one provider per battalion, and it will reduce the stigma,” said Pasquarette.

Forrt Carson officials say the new facility will be especially needed as more soldiers from the 4th Brigade come home.
