PALMER LAKE, COLO. -- In this week's A+ News feature, a Lewis Palmer District 38 elementary school has gone back in time for the sake of the environment.
Tuesday students and staff opened a 20-year-old time capsule filled with Arbor Day memorabilia. Inside were pictures, letters, and videos from the past -- artifacts from students attending the school in 1990.
"It was very interesting and very historic to see the former principal and superintendent, and just to see what the kids put in there, and to compare the different types of technology," principal Julie Jadomski said.
Palmer Lake invited the town's mayor, District 38's superintendent and other elected officials to the special event, many of whom participated in constructing the original 1990 time capsule.
The students then added their own items to be sealed up for another 20 years.
"We put in a flier made by our fifth graders with tips for incoming fifth graders, tips for taking care of the environment. Other grades put in programs from their performances, and artifacts, mascots and some letters," Jadomski said.
After closing up the time capsule, the students headed outside to follow in the footsteps of their alumni. They planted trees, flowers, and cleaned up their playground. They said it is important to take care of the environment not just in the spring, but all year round.
"If we did not take care of the environment, there would probably just be piles of trash," said fourth grader Novella.
"If we did not do that then the world would not be good, and it would be harder to live and not as safe," said fifth grader Ryan.
