WIDEFIELD, COLO. -- Update at 4:30 p.m.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPCSO) has charged a juvenile, age 16, in Wednesday morning's incident of report of a person with a weapon at Mesa Ridge High School.

The unidentified teen is charged with third-degree criminal trespass, two counts of interference-educational institution, possession of marijuana, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal attempt theft.

EPCSO says the school resource officer, who is also an El Paso County Sheriff's deputy, saw a young male with what she believed to be a gun. The suspect, who is not a student at Mesa Ridge High School, was identified and the deputy attempted to contact him when he ran from the area.

After a brief foot chase, the suspect was apprehended by other deputies who responded to the call for assistance.

They determined the suspect discarded a weapon during the chase, which was a hacksaw.

Webster Elementary School, James Madison Charter Academy and Mesa Ridge High School were placed on a 15-minute lockdown status, according to School District 3 spokesperson James Drew.

The juvenile was served a summons and released to his parents.

El Paso County Sheriff's deputies were called to Mesa Ridge High School, 6070 Mesa Ridge Pkwy., Wednesday morning at approximately 8:30 on report of a person outside the school with a weapon.

According to School District 3 spokesperson James Drew, three community members who were entering the school saw a male outside the building with a hacksaw.

The school's resource officer contacted the person and also called sheriff's deputies.

At no time was there a threat to students in the school, Drew said, and never did the suspect enter the school.

It is believed the male suspect might have had intents to steal a bicycle, sawing through a chain.

Deputies are at the school questioning the suspect.
