FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) — A Fort Carson soldier from Aurora who died of wounds he suffered when a bomb exploded near his vehicle in Afghanistan was one of three soldiers personally awarded a Purple Heart by President Barack Obama.

Twenty-four-year-old Sean M. Durkin died Friday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington. Maj. T.J. Taylor, a spokesman for the 4th Brigade Combat Team in Afghanistan, says Durkin was among the soldiers Obama personally visited March 28 during the president's visit to a hospital in Kabul.

Fort Carson officials say Durkin joined the Army Feb. 16, 2006. He was assigned to Fort Carson's 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team. Two other soldiers survived the March 27 attack.
