COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO -- It was a tragic day that left many people asking that if the Department of Human Services (DHS) had listened to the complaints that were made, would Alize Vick be alive today?
“This is really an unprecedented event that as far back as decades even, that we've been tracking for a foster parent to kill a child. This is just something we have not seen,” said Richard Bengtsson, DHS director.
The amount settled on is $300,000, this between El Paso County and Ashley Lindenberger, Alize's biological mother.
DHS operations in Colorado Springs will now see some changes.
“We created a policy where unusual information like this has to be shared with a supervisor, manager or an administrator. There has to be team decision-making. We put policies in place for child placement agencies and ourselves to communicate better and share information. If an incident doesn't arise to an abuse or neglect allegation, they still need to share that incident with us and we do track those incident reports,” said Bengtsoon.
Alize had been taken in by 36-year-old Jules Lynn Cuneo through Kids Crossing, a child placement agency under contract with El Paso County DHS.
Alize died in October of 2007 after prosecutors say she was thrown 5 feet across a living room by Cuneo. She was charged with child abuse resulting in death last month.
Cuneo will be sentenced in April.
