WALSH, Colo. (AP) -- The tiny Walsh School District in Colorado's far southeast corner is getting power from a wind turbine under the Colorado Wind for Schools program.

The 2.4-kilowatt turbine, owned and operated by the district, started running in December.

District Superintendent Kyle Hebberd doesn't expect the turbine to save much money. He sees it as an opportunity to expand the use of renewable energy, which eventually could help cut costs.

Hebberd says the turbine also will provide educational opportunities for students. Math and science teachers will use it as an example for lessons.

The district paid only $1,700 of the turbine's $15,000 cost, thanks to state and federal grants and donations from the community.
