DENVER (AP) -- Denver prosecutors have filed a first-degree murder charge against a man accused of injuring his girlfriend's 18-month-old son so badly that the child died.

Thirty-one-year-old Jacob Garcia also is charged with child abuse resulting in death. He was being held without bond Wednesday, and it was unknown if he had hired a lawyer.

Police were called to a home Dec. 29 on a report of a child not breathing.

Denver Health Medical Center doctors say the toddler suffered "subdural bleeding in the brain" and had bruises on his body, according to a probable cause statement in the case.

Court documents say Garcia told police the boy ran into a hallway and fell.
