Plan on volunteering at giveaway on December 21

MONUMENT, COLO. -- In this week's A+ News feature, a District 38 high school football team is giving back to the community. Team members are participating in the Bob Telmosse Christmas Giveaway.

"We believe football is more than just a game, and we believe it is a way of instilling good values in our kids, so it is about good sportsmanship on and off the field," Billy Farmer said.

Farmer is a sophomore at Palmer Ridge High School in Monument. He also plays for the school's football team.

Farmer said for the past few weeks he and his teammates have been collecting donations for the Bob Telmosse Christmas Giveaway. It was an idea given to them by a team mom.

"Last year we did it as a family, so we just thought the giveaway needed more community to help out because there was not enough workers, so we thought about the team, it was something we could do," Kiel Osterman said.

Osterman is also a sophomore and member of the football team. He said so far the group has made several rounds about the community to pick up donated items. Just last week they loaded down a mini-van with food for the giveaway.

Osterman said the experience has been great for the whole team.

"It definitely gives you a different feeling about Christmas. It is not just about presents but giving away and being kind to one another, and I think we have lost that so it is nice to get it back," Osterman said.

The team plans to continue collecting until the big giveaway, scheduled for Dec. 21 at The Citadel shopping mall. On that day the team will volunteer to help hand out the toys, food and clothing.

"Christmas time is a time for giving, and that is what we need to remember, especially in times like these when the economy is down and a lot of people are struggling, those that are fortunate need to remember to help others," Farmer said.
