American Idol singer performs benefit concert in Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. --
American Idol is 9-year-old Megan Phalen's favorite show. She's only missed "maybe two or three episodes" ever and who's her favorite Idol? "I'm going to have to say the one I like is Jason Castro," grinned the 9-year-old.So, the radio station 98.9 Magic FM reached out to one of its friends, American Idol's Jason Castro, for some help. Castro was a finalist in Season 7 of the popular FOX television show. He's immediately recognizable due to his long dreadlocks hairstyle and his piercing blue eyes.
Castro has generously agreed to come to Colorado Springs and perform a benefit concert for Megan Wednesday. "I thought it was going to be really cool because it's the first famous person I'm going to meet," said Megan.
Megan was diagnosed with leukemia when she was only three years old. Since then she has relapsed twice and endured four unsuccessful years of chemo therapy. Now she is scheduled for a bone marrow transplant in January, which doctors hope will finally cure the leukemia.
Because of Megan's weakened immune system most of her days are spent inside, so American Idol is a highlight for Megan's nights.
"Her immune system is really low from the chemo treatments [so] we have to keep the house really clean, watch the traffic we have in and out of the house and…we can't have anyone over who's sick," explained Megan's mother Melissa.
"Whenever I'm watching TV and it starts to get boring I usually just read, draw, write or color," said Megan.
Even though Megan knows this situation isn't forever her mom said she takes it in good stride. And getting to personally meet Jason Castro and know he's singing a concert for her certainly is a great Christmas gift, but it wouldn't be her first Christmas wish. "If I had a Christmas wish I would wish for every sick kid to just heal real fast and be good and healthy," said Megan.
Wednesday's "Christmas Miracle for Megan!" put on by Magic FM will take place at Mr. Biggs Family Fun Center on Dec. 16 at 7pm. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5. Proceeds will help Megan's mother Melisa, a single mom, with three kids, pay for all the extra expenses that insurance won't cover for Megan's upcoming bone marrow transplant.
