Health care reform meeting stays calm

WOODLAND PARK, COLO. -- Rep. Doug Lamborn hosted the first town hall meeting in southern Colorado to discuss health care reform on Tuesday.

The meeting, which took place in Woodland Park's City Hall, gave residents the chance to discuss the act that would create a government-run insurance plan.

Lamborn also explained a different act he is supporting that intends to improve the current state of private insurance.

The goal in both of these proposed health care reform acts is to reduce number of Americans who are uninsured.

The problem is the best way to do that is up for debate, and so in many cases across the country these meetings have gotten emotional.

At Woodland Park's meeting, a small group of supporters said a government-run, free health care plan would mean insurance for all.

"The health care reform has to include a public option or there is no reason for the insurance companies to play fair," said Christy Le Lait.

Then there was the larger line of opponents who fear government health care will lead to a bigger budget deficit and decreased quality of care.

"I am 100 percent against this bill, and I think it is being pushed through way too fast," said Hillevi Peterson.

Both sides of the issue were represented, amounting to more than 200 people crowded into Woodland Park's City Hall asking for answers from Lamborn.

He doesn't support a government health care plan. Instead, Lamborn wants to give people greater control in choosing a health care provider, increasing competition and leading to individual tax incentives.

"Making health care more affordable, giving them the choice, letting them have the relationship with the doctor not letting government bureaucrats get in the way," Lamborn said.

It was good news to the majority of the crowd who doesn't want government health care, leading to a town hall meeting with little upset.

"If they are going to push through a bill, let it be the kind of bill the country itself could vote on," Peterson said.

Lamborn will host two more meetings next week, one in Canyon City, August 25, the other in Colorado Springs, August 27.

He is also encouraging everyone to share their opinions on the proposed health care reform with their senators and congressmen.
