9-1-1 flooded with non-emergency calls
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- Traffic is crawling across Southern Colorado this afternoon, with numerous accidents reported and a growing list of impassable highways. The number of cars on the road seems to be getting smaller, but there are still problems for those who are trying to get out and about.
Interstate 25 southbound between Pueblo and Walsenberg is closed due to numerous accidents. Interstate 70 between Denver and the Kansas border, as well as Interstate 25 between Wellington and the Wyoming border.
Many side streets are quickly becoming snow-covered & icy, creating problems for drivers who are attempting to navigate streets with any elevation. Bridges and overpasses are becoming skating rinks as the tire-packed snow turns into ice.
El Paso County reports that there are nearly 40 trucks out working on the roads, but as the winds & snow continue to work their magic it'll take a while for crews to get a handle on the situation.
Mountain Metro Transit and FREX are operating, but running with delays between 30-45 minutes. The Colorado Springs Airport and Denver International are open but experiencing delays. They suggest calling your air carrier to see if flights are operating on time both Thursday night and Friday morning.
Colorado Springs Police say that the 9-1-1 call center has been overloaded with calls, and people are hanging up when they don't get an immediate answer. They are asking to ONLY dial 9-1-1 if it is an actual emergency. To reach the Colorado Springs Police Department, call them at their non-emergency numbers: 444-7000, 444-7911, 444-7912 or 444-7913.
Travel across the region is strongly discouraged until Friday.
