COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- We have an update on efforts by a group of Widefield parent to save the D.A.R.E. program.

It was recently removed from their school district as a part of El Paso County's budget cuts.

The committee had their first large fundraiser today at Skate City.

Close to 400 people participated, that's the largest turnout the skate rink has ever had.

"If we can get turn outs like this and we can show the public and possibly businesses that this community is fighting for this program, I think people will start stepping up," said Stacey Howell.

The event raised about $600, bringing the committee's total to nearly $9,000.

They need to raise $75,000 to get D.A.R.E. back in the Widefield schools.

The committee will be having additional fundraisers in the future.

On February 22, from 8-10 A.M., they'll be having pancake breakfast at the Applebee's in Fountain.

Tickets will be sold at schools in District 3, or at the door.
