WIDEFIELD, COLO. -- A local school bus driver was arrested Tuesday, charged with sexual assault on a child.
The alleged incidents took place more than a decade ago when the accuser was around 12 years old. The alleged victim is now 23.
TheEl Paso County Sheriff's Office arrested 48 year old Robert Gordon, charging him with three counts of sexual assault on a child. Gordon is currently a bus driver in Widefield School District 3. He was placed on unpaid administrative leave after his arrest.
According to Gordon's arrest affidavit the alleged victim told deputies the two started as friends after they met through a church in the Security/Widefield area. He said he would stay overnight at Gordon's home and eventually their friendship turned into a sexual relationship.
The documents said the two started watching pornography together which over time led to both oral and anal sex. The alleged victim also said Gordon watched him perform sexual acts on another juvenile.
After a year long investigation a detective interviewed Gordon who denied the allegations but later admitted to having a sexual relationship with the victim.
"People who are even arrested for crimes are certainly innocent until proven guilty and we have to make sure that we do our due diligence in following up on accusations or reports of crimes," Lt. Jeff Kramer, El Paso County Sheriff's Public Information Officer, said. "Many times those take several weeks, several months to be able to do a thorough job, to make sure we've crossed the t's and dotted the i's, and are making appropriate decisions based on probable cause on who's going to be arrested if anyone."
D-3 said immediately after Gordon was arrested he was placed on administrative leave.
"In no way shape or form would we have a person that's involved in anything such as this to be working with our children," Kirk Vsetecka, D-3 Executive Director of Human Resources, said.
Vsetecka said the district conducts extensive background searches along with reference checks on all of their employees and Gordon passed.
"Anything along these lines it makes me and it makes the district as a whole want to double, triple check, make sure that we're doing everything that we can possibly do to ensure the safety of our kids so if there is something additional that we can do we will do it," Vsetecka said.
According to D-3 Gordon routes included King Elementary School and Widefield High School. He has been employed there since 2006.
"Our district always works very hard, very diligently, to ensure that all of our kids have a safe place to be," Vsetecka said.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said they aren't aware of any other victims at this time.
"It's always a concern. Certainly when you have anybody whose committed a crime you always wonder if maybe this has been something that has gone on for some time and this is the only victim who has chosen to come forward," Kramer said.
Gordon is being held on a $250,000 bond on three felony charges: sexual assault on a child, sexual assault on a child/position of trust, and sexual assault on a child/pattern of abuse.
