COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The Waldo Canyon Fire is 100 percent contained but firefighters are still working the area with hazard reduction crews monitoring hot spots to ensure nothing flares up.
Fire crew responsibilities also include responding to new starts which on Saturday was a spot fire sparked by lighting.
"This particular fire is well away from the Waldo Canyon Fire but shows the forest is still dry and can burn," Rob Deyerberg, fire information officer for the Waldo Canyon Fire said.
Fire crews moved quickly to make sure the single tree lighting strike didn't grow.
A helicopter and bucket drops were used to help the crew on the ground with the initial attack.
"We even take a small fire seriously a small one can still grow to a large one," Deyerberg said.
Aerial support has been covering the burn area of the Waldo Canyon fire, scanning the grounds once and twice a day.
But while the community is on high alert about future fires crews want you to take note before calling 911.
"It's perfectly appropriate for people to keep a heads up on smoke or things they see. Only thing we ask is if it's obviously inside the Waldo Canyon burn area there's no reason to call and report that," Deyerberg said.
