DENVER (AP) -- A man evacuated by the wildfire that devastated Colorado Springs says firefighters not only saved his home but also his chickens.

After being gone a week, Ken Barker told Denver's KMGH-TV he was surprised to find eight of his nine chickens still alive. But there was an explanation in a note left on his porch that was signed "Montana firefighters." The note said they had removed one dead chicken from the backyard coop and gave the others food and water.

There are burned bushes just inches from Barker's home and the heat from the fire melted paint on a rocking chair inside.

The 29-square-mile Waldo Canyon fire killed two people and destroyed nearly 350 homes, making it the most destructive in Colorado history.

It was fully contained Tuesday.
