EL PASO COUNTY, COLO. -- It didn't take long for southern Colorado residents to show how much they support fellow community members and firefighters.

Fewer than 48 hours after El Paso County's most notable fire in decades forced more than 11,000 people out of their homes, local organizations have reported major donation efforts.

Care and Share, Colorado's largest food bank, has collected 117,000 pounds worth of items for evacuees and fire crews. Of that, 100,000 pounds are liquids such as water and Gatorade for the ones fighting the Waldo Canyon Fire. In addition, the bank has collected $15,000 in monetary donations. Because of the influx of liquids, they are now asking only for non-perishable food items.

In partnership with the Salvation Army, Red Cross officials at Cheyenne Mountain High School and Summit Elementary School served more than 400 meals to evacuees over the weekend.

The Pikes Peak Community Foundation and the Red Cross are both accepting monetary donations for firefighters, and you can go to either of their websites to donate.

Goodwill is accepting donations specifically for firefighters and evacuees and is also looking for volunteers.

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region is once again accepting animals. You can also take animals to any one of the participating businesses in Colorado Springs or stay with them at Rocky Mountain Health care Services.

Several organizations said they no longer need volunteers after the overwhelming support this weekend. The Penrose equestrian Center, which was taking in large animals, and Pikes Peak United Way are no longer needing volunteers.

The new Mining Exchange Wyndham Grand Hotel is offering 60 rooms at the owners’ rate of $99/night for any evacuees needing short-term shelter for the next few nights. Please call (719) 323-2000 to make reservations. These are rooms that were being finished to put into hotel inventory in the next week or so that the owner has made available early for this purpose.

The Sky Sox offered free tickets to evacuees for Monday's game, and the YMCA also let evacuees use their facilities for free.

Evacuees and community members can attend a public meeting about the fire at Cheyenne Mountain High School at 7 p.m. Monday. If you are evacuated or plan on leaving, here is a list of some things to bring with you.
