TELLER COUNTY, COLO. -- Dozens of animals have been evacuated from the Springer Fire zone.

More than 130 horses are being cared for at The Teller County Fairgrounds in Cripple Creek.

The majority of them are from the Sanborn Western Camps.

"This is the first time we have had to evacuate for a fire," Maren MacDonald, Riding Director with Sanborn Western Camps, said.

MacDonald said dozens of volunteers, with their trailers in tow, came out of woodwork to help the horses Sunday.

The volunteers transported the group to the fairgrounds.

"It is very humbling being on the receiving end of such a group effort to support us," MacDonald said.

Along with transportation, residents have also been stopping by with water and hay.

"We have had multiple water companies actually bring their tankers and fill up our water troughs," MacDonald said.

"It has been overwhelming, from all over the state people are coming, I have a volunteer from Vail that has come to help us at our temporary shelter," Mary Steinviser, Shelter Manager with the Teller County Animal Shelter, said.

While the big animals are in Cripple Creek, the smaller pets are being cared for at the Teller County Animal Shelter in Divide.

"Currently we have 11, but we are geared up for a larger influx of smaller animals if the need arises," Steinviser said.

Steinviser said it has been hard for the animals, who are out of their element and away from their families.

"These days anymore people think of their animals as members of the family, so they need to know they are safe and well cared for," Steinviser said.
