PENROSE, COLO. -- Fremont County Sheriff's deputies said a 12-year-old boy accidentally shot himself Tuesday afternoon while handling a gun.

According to deputies, the boy was shooting a .22 caliber revolver outside his Penrose home on County Road 123 around 4:30 p.m. He went back inside and accidentally dropped the gun. When he dropped it, the gun discharged, and the boy was shot in the stomach.

The boy's stepfather took him to a hospital, where he had to go into surgery. Deputies said they expect him to be okay.

Deputies said no charges have been filed, and there doesn't appear to be any evidence of a crime. Deputies did not say who the gun belonged to. They are continuing the investigation.
