COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Colorado Springs Police officers said 40 people had to be rescued during Wednesday night's hail storm that pounded much of the city and surrounding areas.

Of the 40 people, 23 were rescued from cars, and 17 were rescued from buildings. Most of the rescues are credited to the Colorado Springs Fire Department after the three-hour hail storm caused flash floods in various parts of the city east of I-25.

Police officers said they were able to help where they could as well.

Officers said the dispatch center received 600 emergency calls between 6:30 p.m. and 8:41 p.m. Wednesday night, and most of those calls were weather-related.

Of the 600 calls, about 100 came in between 8:04 and 8:14.
