25 Colo. medical marijuana shops near schools close

DENVER (AP) -- The 25 Colorado marijuana shops targeted in a second wave of warning letters from federal prosecutors to close or face potential legal action have all shut down.

In March, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Denver sent letters warning 25 marijuana dispensaries within 1,000 feet of schools to close. All had done so by the deadline Monday. An earlier round of letters resulted in 22 other Colorado dispensaries closing in February.

Federal prosecutors said Tuesday a third round of warning letters is coming. The goal is to close all marijuana stores within 1,000 feet of schools.

Colorado law allows for limited use and possession of marijuana for medical reasons, but the drug remains illegal under federal law, which includes enhanced criminal penalties for selling drugs within 1,000 feet of schools.
