Dead soldier's parents to walk to Illinois

FORT CARSON, COLO. -- The parents of a Fort Carson soldier killed in Iraq in 2008 will walk from the Mountain Post all the way to Marseilles, Ill. beginning Friday.

Dan and Michelle Benavidez, the parents of Staff Sgt. Kennith Mayne, will begin the walk from Manhart Field on base around 1 p.m.

Mayne, who died during Operation Iraqi Freedom, was serving with the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division before he was killed Sept. 4, 2008.

Fort Carson officials will hold a ceremony Friday, and soldiers, friends and family members will join the couple for the ceremonial first mile of the walk, which will be from the field to Gate One.

The 1,000-mile walk is to raise awareness of the challenges soldiers and their families face.
