FORT CARSON, COLO. -- It was an emotional day for the Mountain Post's 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division as they honored Staff Sgt. Daniel Joseph Brown.
The 27-year-old was killed March 24 while deployed in Afghanistan. He was the company's only casualty.
"They're getting the job done but with heavy hearts. He was counting on bringing everybody home," Capt. Thomas Peabody of the U.S. Army said.
Brown spent the past nine years with a selfless service to the Army, embracing challenges, helping when needed and leading troops on the ground during dismounted patrols.
"He was always smiling, very happy person and had a lot to live for. He was looking forward to coming home to his growing family," Peabody said.
Brown was a newly wed and was told his wife was pregnant while overseas. While on leave, he was able to experience a brief moment of the pregnancy but would never get a chance to me his two twin daughters.
He was expected to return home with an advance team this month, but instead of celebrating his safe return, Fort Carson is remembering his life, duty and commitment to the country as an American hero.
