COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Day eight of the trial for the former Colorado Springs Police officer accused of more than 200 criminal charges saw some of the alleged victims defend Joshua Carrier's character prior to the allegations.
"I said okay," one boy said when Carrier, the former assistant wrestling coach at Horace Mann Middle School, asked the boy if he could touch the boy's genitals to perform 'skin checks.' "I figured if there was something wrong, I trust him to tell me."
Carrier has plead not guilty to sexually assaulting at least 15 current and former wrestlers during the 2010-2011 season.
"I didn't think anything of it," the boy testified Tuesday. "He's the medicine doctor...anyone would feel uncomfortable if they're being touched."
The boy said he never thought Carrier had a sexual interest in him and was never suspicious about anything.
"I thought Carrier was a really cool guy," the boy said while recalling stories Carrier shared with him. "I knew he knew what he was doing, that's why I trusted him."
Another boy said Carrier was not only helpful during the wrestling season but also easy to talk with about other subjects. The boy's mother even encouraged him to talk to Carrier about drugs and sex after the boy had tried marijuana and had sex.
However, that all changed when Carrier was arrested.
"Carrier would never do something like that," the first boy said of what he thought when he first heard the news.
But police later showed the boy a nude picture of him Carrier had taken from his computer in the wrestling office while performing the check on the boy.
"I guess I was all wrong," the boy said.
