COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A recommendation to have class in session on Veterans Day in Colorado Springs School District 11 has created a backlash from some local veterans.

D-11 was in the middle of finalizing the 2012-2013 school calendar when the Calendar Committee recommended Veterans Day be recognized and celebrated, but not as a school holiday.

During Wednesday's board meeting several veterans addressed their concerns about the possible change in scheduling. One man called it disheartening, another said it's close to un-American.

"It's easy enough to think it's just a day off, but it's not. It's more than that, it's recognition of the sacrifices they've made, not only the veteran himself but his family has made as well," Larry Anderson, club manager for The Retired Enlisted Association, said.

After the board of edu cation explained the holiday would push the last day of school back one day, board members voted unanimously to reinstate Veterans Day as a school holiday.

The board's decision will only affect the 2012-2013 school year, it will be up for discussion again next year.
