COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A Colorado Springs high school basketball player could soon be shooting threes on national hardwood, but she needs the community's help to get there.
Kim Cerjan, a senior at Doherty High School, has made it to the Final Four of the 2012 American Family Insurance Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships. If she wins the next round, she will show off her talent and represent Colorado at the NCAA Men's Final Four in New Orleans on April 1.
"My coach sent in a film of me shooting 3-pointers," Cerjan said.
Head coach for the Lady Spartan's basketball team, Patrick McKiernan, said he submitted the video because Cerjan is one of the best 3-point shooters he's seen in his coaching career.
"I consider her one of the top five 3-point shooters in the state," he said. "I thought she was the best candidate to compete at the national level."
After the video was submitted, CBS Sports selected Cerjan as one of the top 16 female athletes from across the country to compete in the Facebook-driven contest. Cerjan said she is excited for the opportunity to represent not only her hometown, but also her school.
"It's the best feeling in the world to know that I am ranked in the top 16 in the nation," she said. "It's an amazing feeling to have a Doherty student out in New Orleans."
Before Cerjan can show her skills on a national stage, she needs help from her community. On Facebook, Cerjan has to collect more votes than her competitor from Pennsylvania. She's a few clicks behind, but her coach has high hopes that Colorado can help Cerjan score a ticket to the final round.
"The community always comes together when we need them," McKiernan said. "I believe we can do it."
