DENVER (AP) -- The father of Colorado's Taxpayers' Bill of Rights has been sentenced to 180 days in jail and six years' probation for evading taxes.

Douglas Bruce was sentenced today after his felony convictions for evading state taxes, filing a false return and failing to file a tax return between 2005 and 2010. His jail term comes from two consecutive 90-day terms.

Bruce was convicted of hiding millions of dollars in a sham charity prosecutors said he set up to avoid taxes.

Bruce, a former state lawmaker, said state officials went after him for promoting smaller government. He vowed to appeal.

Bruce's short jail term was described as part of his probation.
