PUEBLO, COLO. -- In an effort to cut costs, four schools in the Pueblo City Schools are on the chopping block.
Back in October, arepurposing committee recommended school closures as a way to save money.
According to former School Board President Stephanie Garcia the district has 10,000 fewer students than they did in the 1970s, but the same amount of schools.
In determining which schools would close the committee looked at the age of the building, proximity to other schools and school capacity.
In Thursday night's meeting, the Pueblo City Schools board voted to move sixth grade students to elementary schools at Irving, Morton, Columbian, Minnequa, Heritage, Baca, Haaff, and Sunset Park.
They also decided to keep Carlile and Beulah Heights Elementaries open and to close Spann and Hellbeck Elementaries.
The Somerlid Elementary building will be closed and students will relocate to Freed Middle School.
The changes will take effect starting next fall.
As for the recommendation to realign the district's middle schools, that decision has been pushed back.
