DENVER (AP) -- Denver police issued a rare apology over the release of texts sent between some officers responding to the Occupy Denver protests in which protesters were referred to as "hippies," "yahoos," and "wimps."
The car-to-car texts were filed as part of a lawsuit by protesters who alleged selective enforcement of city ordinances by Denver police as a means to harass them. A judge denied their request for a temporary restraining order, which effectively ends the lawsuit. The texts filed as part of the suit include some sent Oct. 14, when Denver moved to become the first city to crackdown on protesters of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
In a statement, police say they regret the tenor and tone of some of those texts and say steps have been taken to address the officers' behavior.
