TELLURIDE, COLO. (AP) --  A Federal Aviation Administration official says a small plane en route from Durango to Aspen has crashed near Telluride.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the Socata TB-21 aircraft crashed Saturday in an area north of Silverton. Montrose police who joined in a multi-agency search after an alert was issued found wreckage from the plane shortly before 3 p.m. Authorities later found a debris field.

San Juan County emergency manager Kristina Maxfield says the single-engine aircraft can seat up to four people, but it was not known how many might have been on board.

She says a search effort for any possible survivors was called off until morning as heavy snowfall blankets the area.
