COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- A half-million dollar grant is making a big impact, turning a vacant liquor store into transitional housing for the Springs Rescue Mission.

The money is coming from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas and is part of the Affordable Housing Program.

The AFP grant helps assist in the development of affordable housing for very low to moderate income households.

[The mission] helps deal with issues of drug addiction, alcoholism, and broken heartedness, and I was a victim of all three," Robert Worrall, a mission graduate, said.

Worrall is now 4.5 years sober, and thanks to the $500,000 grant, dozens of new men will have a chance at sobriety.

The vacant liquor store will be renovated to help in the recovery process to include 44 beds.

The majority of the check will go towards the purchase of the building and double the mission's housing, for their New Life Program.

"The economy and the challenges of staying on course to provide all the services have been in the past years, certainly we're struggling," Joe Vazquez, Springs Rescue Mission, CEO said.

The number of people in need of help from the mission is growing, and they don't want to turn anyone away.

But the New Life Program is at capacity, so money like this is needed more now than ever.

"There is no monetary worth to what was given to me by this program," Worrall said.
