COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- The City of Colorado Springs has a new team assigned to revive the city's appearance.

Wednesday, Mayor Steve Bach and neighborhood advocate Dave Munger announced the creation of a Streetscapes Solution Team. The team will join community leaders in their efforts to find ways to improve the look of Colorado Springs without increasing tax funding.

The Streetscapes Solution Team will explore options to beautify neighborhoods by looking at what is and isn't working in the city. They will also look at how other communities of similar climates have maintained or improved their neighborhoods.

"I think there are many solutions available that will allow us to keep a very certain look that we expect in certain neighborhoods," Munger said, "such as changing vegetation that may require less maintenance."

The team will be headed by Munger and will include members of city staff and volunteers. Munger said they hope to recruit as much help as possible as there are many parts of the city they want to revive.

"We're not just simply talking about residential areas," he said. "We're talking about businesses, non-profit organizations because we've got a lot of parts of the city that are mixed use in nature."

Areas the team plans to work on are the neighborhoods along busy city streets like Academy Boulevard. Mayor Bach said many homes are backed up along the busy street, and the area behind the fences is not attractive.

"What people don't know is that those property owners are actually responsible for maintaining that part of the street," he said. "We've got a chance here to get some funding to help the other side of the fence to beautify this. We need to ask your help."

Mayor Bach said the Streetscapes Solution Team will also look at other resource options like corporate and individual sponsorship, as well as grant opportunities.

"Our community is full of talented people with experience and knowledge who are more than willing to partner with city staff on a volunteer basis to find innovative solutions to challenges," he stated in a press release. "I appreciate the willingness of these citizens to step up and contribute in ways that will make a positive difference in our community."

The Streetscapes Solution Team is expected to present a plan to the mayor in the coming months.

In the meantime, the team is also looking for recommendations from the community for the improvement project. Do you have any? Or do you have suggestions for what they should focus on improving first? If so, share your thoughts in our comment section below.
