PUEBLO, COLO. -- Some go to ride the rides, others go to watch the rodeos and concerts. Yet, many people go to the Colorado State Fair for the food.
"Every year I like to get the big fries," Elizabeth Dill, a fairgoer from Denver, said.
Funnel cakes, turkey legs, cotton candy and corn dogs. Those are just a few items you would expect to see on a fair food menu.
This year there are also a few choices you would not expect to see.
"Crickets, maggots, kangaroo, ostrich, buffalo," Dill said. "All kinds of neat stuff."
Dill said there are all kinds of exotic food available at a booth at the fair.
It's called "Jungle George's Exotic Meats and Bugs."
"Our booth is all about being different," Jungle George's manager Rodney Wright said. "Everybody has hot dogs, corn dogs and funnel cakes. We're trying to do something different."
But is "different" something fairgoers are willing to try?
"Probably not," Bryan Rosencutter, a fairgoer from Colorado Springs, said. "Maybe if I didn't know what it was."
Dill disagreed...sort of.
"I'd try anything," she said. "Probably just not the maggots."
Wright said the Maggot Melt Sandwich is the booth's more famous entree. In fact, it has been featured on The Food Network and The Travel Channel.
"It's a grilled cheese sandwich with maggots on it," Wright said. "People love it."
The Maggot Melt Sandwich is not always the meal of choice for fairgoers however. According to Wright, most people seem to choose the exotic meat from the swamplands.
"Ever since the swamp people show came out, everyone wants to try alligator," he said.
Some of the other exotic choices on the menu: python, black bear burger, chocolate covered crickets, kangaroo and frog legs.
